The Connoisseur's Journal

Pairing guide

Which drink goes with which cigar? The key rules and proven combinations by cigar strength.

The basic rules

  1. 1. Match the intensity

A mild cigar gets lost next to a smoky whisky. Strong with strong, mild with mild.

  2. 2. Complement or contrast

Similar aromas reinforce each other, like cocoa and espresso. Sweetness in the glass tames pepper in the cigar.

  3. 3. Water in between

A sip of still or sparkling water between the thirds resets your palate.

  4. 4. Careful with high proof

Cask-strength spirits numb the palate. A few drops of water open up the aromas.
